Appa by *
akreon. To be fair, this artist has an astounding amount of wonderful deviations in their gallery to chose a Daily Deviation from, but the simplicity of this work paired with the unusual, realistic rendition of Appa from Avatar: TLA makes it something that cannot be passed on! Enjoy this and the rest of this deviant's gallery! (

The textures in the background are appropriately suggestive of clouds while Appa himself seems believably horse or doglike with his shagginess.
The cold grays used here work very well for the image on its own, but may come across as unusually somber to fans of the series.
The only part that may not be quite working yet are the arrows. On Appa's back where the fur is relatively smooth, it works for the arrows to have such clean definition; however, as the fur gets much shaggier, especially on the forelocks, the markings look more like a projection onto the animal, rather than a pattern of colors in the fur. There are ways to reconcile Appa's most recognizable characteristics with your more naturalistic interpretation.
Perhaps the arrow on the head could be seen under the forelock, like star or a blase on a horse. While the markings wouldn't be visible in a scene like this, they would be visible in flight with the wind blowing the long hair out of his face, or if he was groomed with his hair in braids or tied back ribbons or bells for an Air Nomad celebration.
In any case, it's a strong picture in it's own right.
