I really enjoyed painting this piece. Not only I love working with watercolours but it was also a perfect excuse to watch the whole trilogy once again.
LOTR
So, here it is Nazgul crossing the Ford of Bruinen Enjoy!
One is so immediately taken aback by the captivating study of the wild-eyed onrushing stallion, which you have made so very powerful and assaultive yet somehow spectral at the same time, that it takes a full beat before seeing the true subject of the painting, the Ringwraith with unsheathed sword who is actually commanding the steed. Only a truly talented artist produces works like this that dictate and direct such a “reading” from the viewer. The eyes are put into motion to automatically feed the narrative of the work to the deeper brain. The still painting becomes alive upon contact with the eye. I always get a chill each time a piece like this manifests this phenomenon. All of your artworks possess two powerful animating elements: motion and fire. While your “action” pieces swirl and charge and assault with the power of the best action movies, even your still-lifes and landscapes seem to be eerily alive with some inner animating life force. It’s quite remarkable. And I don’t know that I’ve ever seen red and golden light, whether sourced from the sun or actual burning flames or a maiden’s hair, burn quite so brightly as it does in your works. Even your dark pieces drowned in deep shadows and blue-black hues, like “Nazgul” evoke the very absence of this ubiquitous fire – with just the few reflective hints of your always burning fire springing from the few radiant bits visible in the piece. There is a real and very unique signature present throughout all of your works that is very impressive and a pleasure to “read”. How I wish this was hanging on my wall for daily inspiration. I am absolutely eager to witness the evolution of your artistic process over the coming years. I anticipate great things to come.
On the main Deviant Art page, there is a button at the very bottom that dared me to randomly select a Deviant's art page. That randomly selected page had this wonderful painting included in the Deviant's favorite section.
I am so glad that I decided to hit that random button!
And to think what would happen if I hadn't. Would I have ever seen this magnificent piece of art among the thousands upon thousands of deviations here? Most likely not since I am not a member of any Lord of the Rings clubs here at Deviant Art.
This painting is so awesome that I'm afraid to nitpick. I know that I certainly couldn't do a better job! The only teeny tiny problem I have is that I think you could have done a better job with making the painting a bit darker and more sinister. The Dark Riders are supposed to be really scary and evil, but I feel that that didn't come across as well as it could have if you would have used more of the darker colors. Maybe it's just me.
Either way, this is an excellent painting and I look forward to seeing more! Great job!
This is amazing!!! Your use of color did an excellent job making the nazgul and his horse look very chilly and ethereal! Are you planning on doing more paintings from Tolkien's stories?.... I would love to see you do a painting of Mirkwood from The Hobbit!
o__o Damn, this would be impressive even for digital art but knowing that you painted this amplifies the effect. The color pallet you have here is just choice,it really makes the viewer (or atleast myself) imagine a frosty chase with death...that is if the reaper took a more 'pro-active' approach to his job lol
